Maggie Hou credits her hard-work and dedication to get to where she is now: one of Vancouver’s most well-known and much talked about celebrities. Being recognized all around town and asked frequently for autographs, who would have thought this socialite started with such humble beginnings… Born in Zhu Hai, China and growing up in Macao, Maggie lived a simple life and attended private school, but she always knew that it was her destiny to become a performer. With this goal in mind, Maggie did her best at working to achieve this, through local talent shows and modeling jobs, after moving to Vancouver, Canada at age 14. Maggie’s introduction to the entertainment scene, opened up a whole new world of opportunities, filled with excitement and intrigue—and soon Maggie found herself craving for more.
In 1998, Maggie landed the leading role in the National Film Board’s ‘Hanging Out’ film, which was broadcasted all across Canada. But this job still didn’t gain Maggie the exposure she needed to set off her career. It wasn’t until she entered the Y-Generation Teen Talent Contest in 2001 that marked the beginning of Maggie’s rise to stardom.
Maggie credits her growing career to her winning of the Y-Generation Teen Talent Contest in 2001, held by President’s Plaza and Canton Productions Inc. It was through this well-known competition that she gained exposure to Vancouver’s entertainment industry. Soon after winning the Best Actress award at the Y-Generation Teen Talent Contest, Maggie auditioned for the hosting position of Fairchild Television’s ‘What’s On’ show, and to her surprise, she was chosen among thousands of hopefuls to become a regular host for this teen entertainment program. Upon entering the Fairchild Television group, Maggie gained further exposure and made contacts, which led to additional job offerings in the industry. Maggie continues to be the regular host of the ‘What’s On’ show.
Although, Maggie’s true enjoyment is singing and acting, she has had to concentrate on hosting and modeling because the Asian music and acting scene in Vancouver is too small with few opportunities available. But in the past few years of Maggie’s career, she has managed to land a variety of jobs in hosting, singing, acting and modeling, working with many well-known and respected companies, such as World Vision, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant Association, Sunny International Inc., and Delane. Maggie can finally concentrate on her music and acting career, now that she has graduated from the Public Relations Diploma Program at Kwantlen University College.
Maggie believes that the Public Relations Program taught her many valuable skills that could be applied to her work life as an entertainer, such as dealing with the public and the media. Maggie practices her vocal skills when she has free time from studying and working. But now that she has completed her post-secondary studies, Maggie’s time is devoted solely to improving her abilities as a singer and entertainer.
Shortly after, Maggie wanted to pursue her career as a singer in Taiwan while taking on various modeling jobs at CoCo Fashion Magazine and elsewhere, which inspired her to take on a course in Fashion Merchandising in Vancouver. After graduation she moved back to Hong Kong to get back in-touch with her talented singing and performing side and received a contract from TVB which she became a entertainment news host on
various TVB channels and subsequently earned her the popularity today in Hong Kong.
Maggie has also been accept by the Broadway Dance Centre in New York where she will be taking a series of music-related courses but before then, she wants to take a summer break, taking the summer opportunity to show the world her first single Breathe With Me, to thank her friends and family who believed in her in the roughest hours.
There is no doubt that Maggie is headed for more success, whether it is expanding her name further in the local Vancouver market or establishing herself in Asia’s entertainment scene.
