oh no, I think you all got it wrong. sorry for my bad explanation. I meant that when Gloria saw them shoes, she thought they were so "me" and kindly got them for me as a gift. She knows I love shoes (who doesn't if you're a girl) and that my favorite color is purple. But according to the Chinese saying, buying a pair of new shoes as a gift is bad luck, as the receiver will walk away from you wearing them, right? So we had to break the jinx. That's why I gave her money (1000yen is about $10) to pretend it wasn't a present. I did not know my name meant buy in Chinese! I'm studying Chinese now but I learn new words every day!
