Drafted

As anyone who has been reading my blogs of late knows, I'm going to Hong Kong and, while there, will participate in commemoration activities for Leslie Cheung.  I have met a number of fans through Alive Not Dead, an English-language Leslie Cheung fan site and Facebook.  The local group, Red Mission, is organizing a number of public activities for this year's fan commemoration, including a public showing of Leslie's last concert tour, the marvelous Passion Tour.As part of this public showing, I was drafted to edit a letter Red Mission wanted to send the fashion designer, Jean Paul Gaultier, who designed Leslie's costumes for the Passion Tour.  Now it appears that I will also be proofreading English translations of some lyrics of songs that are part of that show.  Although I am extremely busy with trip preparations and working full-time, it has been very gratifying to be able to contribute my language skills to this effort.I am very much looking forward to visiting Hong Kong, meeting a number of Alive Not Dead artists and fans and meeting with a plethora of Leslie fans.  It appears that I am something of a minor celebrity (or perhaps that should oddity) among the Leslie fans.  A number of them have expressed the desire to meet me.  I guess they want to take a look for themselves at a middle-aged gweilo from the wilds of North Carolina who would and could declare herself a fan of their beloved Gor-Gor.  While this may not be my 15 minutes of fame, perhaps I have been granted 5 minutes of celebrity in Hong Kong.  I suppose this puts me on par with some minor Cantopop singers and a few failed actors as far as Hong Kong celebrity goes.

Trust me, I know _exactly_ how you feel! But I think people will very much appreciate your feeling for Leslie, and they will be very glad to meet you. It will make the trip, and Hong Kong, that much more special.

Flagday--fortunately, someone else is doing the heavy lifting, i.e., translating. But that said, song lyrics are definitely among the hardest things to translate. I'm glad all I'm doing is copy editing. Miss Scarlett--I am hoping that your prediction for a memorable trip comes true. Jun--I like your vote of confidence, that I'll love HK. Sean--I thought you would understand. I just have to wonder what my Cantonese nickname will be (since I'm sure no one will be able to pronounce "Marie" with that dreaded "r", and, more importantly, if anyone will tell me what it is? I have 2 memorable physical attributes--my blond hair, and my bust size (at least by Chinese standards). If it was men giving me the nickname, I know which one it would be :-); but this group is women, ladies, even, so I suspect I'll be dubbed--"Blondie". Desmond--Let's rendezvous while I'm in town. I sent schedule and contact info to you via PM.
