This is a true story. [continuing from last eight or nine posts ??‍♀️]⠀ .⠀ I would classify my child-self as the perfect target for bullies - an aloof nerd with allergies, eczema, untamed hair, and terrible taste in fashion (oh wait, that still applies. ? My sister, cousins, and close friends still dress me... and I’m turning thirty this year). When our home was still a refugee house, it was actually really cool to live with cousins that were the same age since I didn’t have too many friends at school. My same-aged cousins lived with us, so despite my social awkwardness, they pretty much had to hang out with me sometimes. Yay. I do think we enjoyed each other’s company despite my oddities. They had the opportunity to learn about American culture from their American-born cousin (me), and I had the opportunity to learn about the country where my parents once called home. My cousins taught me about Vietnamese culture and even some Vietnamese words - hi Tony, Andy, Danny, Steven, Henry, Annie, & David!⠀ .⠀ I was either hanging out with my computer, hanging out with my cousins at home, and rarely, hanging out with my two friends from elementary school. As an introvert, I would say that the computer was usually my first choice because I was able to do so many things without ever having to talk to anyone in real life - #winning. I was a nerd, so I geeked out on learning how to play new instruments, learning Japanese and French and whatever other languages I wanted to learn, building really ugly websites on Geocities, pretending like I was good at Counter Strike, and chatting with my classmates on AIM that probably still think I’m weird and uncool. Those were the good old days.
