We live in a society where anyone can express their beliefs. Our society does not guarantee, however, that expressing one's beliefs will not be without consequences. There are Neo-Nazi groups in the US, they are protected by freedom of speech. They are not protected, however, when they stock pile caches of automatic weapons and explosives and hold training camps to prepare for the ensuing race war that they believe is inevitable. So, unless you are inciting a riot (which is defined rigorously by court precedent), you can say pretty much whatever you want. With the advent of the Internet, more and more people are finding a public outlet for this expression. This right is rigorously protected, and, as the sign of a healthy society, the courts are constantly refining the parameters of free speech on a case by case basis. So, the beauty of US society is that anyone has the right to make whatever claim they want. Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory. It is a religious-philosophical stance that, while having the trappings of pseudo-science, does not adhere to scientific method. Because it is a philosophical theory, it cannot be submitted to the sort of rigorous testing and reproducibility required of a true scientific theory. Evolution and other genetically based theories can and are submitted to rigorous testing. There is a philosophical facet in the personal beliefs of all scientists, but these are personal beliefs and are not part of the science that they present for peer review and publication. Scientists have a wide variety of beliefs about the nature of life and the world. It does them a great disservice to categorize them as all atheists who have no regard for human life. How ironic that it is these same so-called atheists who are leading the research into global warming and are at the forefront of informing the world about its dangers of global warming and are searching to find solutions to the dilemma our world finds itself in. (However, many Creationists don't believe in global warming, either.) Such scientists work tirelessly for the advancement of knowledge, to develop medical cures, and whatever other areas they can use science to improve the lot of life on the planet. Does it bother me that some of them may not believe that a loving, personalized deity created us and everything in the world with HIS hands,? Not not at all. Do I believe Creationists have the right to express their opinion, absolutely. Do I have to take their claims seriously, certainly not. That is the beauty of freedom of speech.. There is a range of views in the scientific community about the appearance and subsequent development of life on this planet. But few scientists think it is as simple as what is described in Genesis (and why always Genesis? there are plenty of world-class scientists who are Chinese, Indian, Indonesian--is a taoist, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Jain, or Islamic view of creation (all different from the Judeo-Christian story) as valid in this argument?). But religion or philosophy exist apart from science. Each is a methodology for observing the world. Philosophy is concerned with the mind and belief. Science concerns itself only with the physical world. Each is a different theoretical system and has different rules and functions differently. To compare them on a point by point basis, as is attempted in this video extract, is not valid. A final point. The Creationists are adamant about imposing their point of view on everyone in this society. They do not want anyone to believe anything except a Fundamentalists Christian theory of creation, exactly as it is described in Genesis (King James Version, preferably/exclusively). They really do not want to debate their issues with scientists, they just want to silence the scientific community and deprive the general public of the right to understand science and scientific method. I am most astonished that a Jewish actor is the spokesperson for this group, unless he has converted to Christianity and we don't know about it.

Actually, I had gotten this movie trailer from some Christian friends here in my city. While I don't always interpret the Bible literally, I definitely see the hand of God in the natural world, and I also believe that this scientist being ostracized for even bringing up intelligent design is wrong and closed-minded on the part of the scientific community.
