I just came home from watching Redacted, which will probably end up to be one of Brian De Palma's lowest grossing films ever. The film opened two weeks ago in Los Angeles but I could only find one theater showing one show every day this week. It's the saddest thing for me, considering that De Palma is my favorite director and that the film also won a Silver Lion for best director in Venice.
Essentially a mocumentary, Redacted tells an atrocious crime committed by an American squad in Iraq through a collage of footage shot by soldiers, blog videos, and home movies. Rigorously produced and entirely "fictional," Redacted is probably one of the most truthful films about war ever made. It might not be a pleasurable ride, but it's definitely worth watching for anyone who cares about cinema and our world.
Unfortunately, the movie opened at the wrong time and place in the world. For those pro-war and right, they have spit on the movie. For the rest of us, we are just exhausted and helpless from hearing about the war.
