After I graduated from Berkeley and got turned down from UCLA film school the first time, I had decided to not wait for film school and start making films. The result became my first video short "To Ride a Cow" <<騎牛找馬>>.
It was the summer of 1992. I rounded up my best girl friend from college and my first boyfriend Mike and we started to shoot the video. We shot it in a few days and I edited it at the East Bay Media Center on Super VHS.
I couldn't find anyone who would do nudity so I decided to put...Read more
Here's something no one has ever seen. When I was at UCLA film school, I took a class with the famed Polish director Jerzy Antczak who made us shoot a scene in one shot. One shot with no cut or whatsoever. That was my priceless education and here's the result:

Simply priceless for nostalgia!

Hey... I just want to share this with you and I don't usually advertise for anyone. Jia Shanghai is having a special for Chinese New Year at their hotel. I've got to say that Jia is my favorite hotel in Hong Kong and I'm sure that the Shanghai Jia is equally fab too! I just love Jia!
Have fun for me in Shanghai! Or better yet... take me there!
When I was in film school at UCLA from 1993 - 1995, I made a few shorts on 16mm that I stitched together as a feature called Flow. I was so desperate to make a feature before I turned 25. Flow world-premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 1995. There, I met Tony Raynes and many other filmmakers. It was my initiation into the mainstream film festival circuit.
Flow was a handmade project that I practically did everything: writing, directing, producing, editing and even shooting. It also marked my early collaboration...Read more
My friend Calvin Ki designed this beautiful 2008 ecard. I just thought I'd share it.
El Orfanato, aka The Orphanage, is probably one of the most well-written and well-made supernatural thrillers I've seen in years. Very rarely have I walked into a movie theater and got completely engrossed by the story and characters. I have to admit that I didn't really get into The Othersuntil the last hour mostly because of Nicole Kidman's well-intentioned but alienating performance.
What impresses me most about El Orfanatois that it tells a perfect ghost story where every piece of a puzzle fits from the opening credits ...Read more
I've just watched a powerful documentary called "The Bridge," a thoughtful and fascinating meditation on suicides that happened on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The Golden Gate Bridge is apparently one of the sites in the world where most people are drawn to jump. In 2004, there were 24 suicides off the bridge. The film is composed of interviews from a multiple perspectives of witnesses, family and friends of the victims and even a victim himself who survived.
