The First Red Bull Flugtag prepares to take off in Hong Kong!

When was the last time you saw a chicken fly in Hong Kong? On 10.10.10, you probably will, amongst a host of many other objects that will hurl themselves off a 6 metre platform off the West Kowloon Heliport. The Hong Kong Air Cadet Corp, together with the Hong Kong Aviation Club Foundation and with the support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board andwith the endorsement ofAustrian Consulate Hong Kong, brings the first ever Red Bull Flugtag (Red Bull飛行日)to Asian soil.

Flug what?? Flugtag (pronounced floog-tag; noun) Flugtag, or “flying day” in German, dares creative individuals to pilot their homemade flying machines off a 6-meter high ramp and into the blue yonder – or, as is more often the case, directly into the waters below. This year, the first Red Bull Flugtag in Asia Pacific is taking off in Hong Kong!

A 6 meter high by 30 meter long launching ramp is constructed upon a barge anchored next to the bay. Competitors access the take off ramp via a long bridge. Held in dozens of countries around the world, the Red Bull Flugtag always gathers thousands of spectators; offering a mix of invention, wit, and competition, against the backdrop of the city’s famous shore and sky line.

The West Kowloon Heliport, located at the southern tip of the West Kowloon Reclamation is a seafront location which looks on to a gorgeous view of the horizon across the harbour, with more than enough space for the ‘pilots’ imaginations to run wild. It is apt that flying day is planned for the helipad and is bound to inspire all sorts of aerial gimmicks.

As the gateway to Asia, the holding of such a large scale international event will continue to highlight and enhance Hong Kong's image as more than a shopping and food paradise, but also help enrich visitors' travel experience and enhancing Hong Kong's attractiveness as a tourist destination,

Red Bull Flugtag is a competition of bravery and brainpower; where home-made, human-powered flying machines will take flight in front of thousands of spectators. Innovative, passionate, ingenious teams can apply to fly by visiting the websitewww.redbullflugtag.hk, or emailingflugtag@hk.redbull.comfor an application kit. There are no entry fees for the event and it’s all for a good cause: any profit generated from the event will be donated to charity.

All finalists will ultimately be selected based on originality and personality. As if participating in a totally unique event wasn’t reward enough, winners can expect to savour their win by taking flight of another nature. Each team will be judged on three criteria: distance, creativity and showmanship. First prize package is a real, genuine pilots license course for the best pilot, second prize consists of a trip for the team to witness the Red Bull Air race in Perth, Australia; and the third prize will have Red Bull organise a party for the team and his friends.

Recruitment started on 1 June, 2010 and notification to successful entries will take place after 31 July, 2010.
