Where to run?

Don’t take EXIT for granted.

In the late nineties I was in charge of a group of performers. We were doing a promotion inChinathat involved working in nightclubs in many cities acrossChina. Nightclubs inChinaare an amazing experience. Each competes to be the biggest, best, most exotic experience. Many have imaginered experiences that you would only find inChina(one had a full scale roller coaster going above the dance floor). The venues are mostly created as a maze of different areas from the main dance floor to karaoke rooms to bars with cabaret style entertainment. In these venues one of the biggest dangers is fire.

One of the first things we would do in every venue was to check for the fire escapes. Over 60% of the time we found these fire escapes blocked with extra tables, chairs etc. Some even chained shut. This is done to keep people from letting their friends in the back door and thus not paying the cover charge. In

one venue that held 6000 people, the escapes were all chained shut, the main entrance had 4 escalators all going up with one going down.  I am happy to say

this has been changing inChina. After several bad accidents the authorities have been cracking down. However if your of working “ in the woods” check the fire exits.
