I am criminally late with this review, but I wanted to get it posted while it still may have some relevance.I went into this film prepared to hate it. I'd seen Rob B Hood and Shinjuku Incident and was ready to swear off Mr. Chan in perpetuity.
I'm glad I didn't, because LittleBig Soldier/大兵小將 is Jackie's best film in a long time.
It's funny, witty, well-directed, and a pleasure to watch. I am, frankly, amazed at how much I liked the film, but very pleasantly amazed.
It's not perfect, but its strengths far outweigh its flaws. There are some great moments in the film, and its overall tone, presentation, and movement make it well worth the effort to watch it!
It has black humour, pathos, comedy and farce (sometimes unintentional), and made me feel very, very glad to be able to say I love a Jackie Chan movie. So grab your friends and family and go support the film. It deserves your support, and you will enjoy it.
If we don't support the movies that deserve it, we get the movies that we deserve.
