Show and Tell

Well, I keep getting emails from AND saying 'the last time you did a blog was....', so feeling obligated to write something. This last month I've basically been locked in my studio painting away day by day as I prepare for the next couple of exhibitions (Madrid in February the Hong Kong in  April) plus, I'm also facing final assessment on my MFA course so it's all work, work work, right now.

So, I'm not going to post new works on the site right now as I got to keep them undercover but I thought I'd show something else. Before I joined this site I had just finished a major installation project in Singapore. The space is called Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. It's a very modern university with a wonderful and huge museum space for exhibitions.

They very kindly gave me some budget and total freedom to do whatever I wanted so I built a 7 room installation with paintings, sculpture and even performance but the main part was a large cinema space for which I made an original film.

The whole thing was produced over 6 months and the construction for the show was about 3 weeks. The show finished in July and I'm now looking at rebuilding and updating the project in another country.

Unfortunately there's not much chance it'll be seen in Hong Kong because there is nowhere that could house such a large show and no-one has money for this kind of thing.

Anyway here's a few photos. I must point out that Wing Shya was also instrumental in the project. His team contributed greatly and he produced one area in the show which you can see below. That guy is awesome!

the gallery space, 50m long by 10m wide

the 3D plan of the show

Gallery space under construction, as you can see the building of the 7 rooms was a bit like making a movie set

once the structure was built, a roof was put on so the whole show was very dark, minimal lighting, was like walking through a haunted house!

sculpture  under construction in Beijing

one of the 7 logos that could be found throughout the exhibition

the outside with the title of the show 'azhanti high lightning'

room 1, sculpture

room 2, paintings

looking back into room 2 from room 3

looking into room 3 which had  trophy heads on the wall and 2 large projected movies at  each end of the corridor

room 4, photography , all produced by Wing Shya

room 5 was a circle of TV's in total darkness. each TV showed a separate short films with sound supplied by Dan F of Yumla/Disuye.

room 6, this was the main film room with 4 video projectors giving a 360degree experience. Amzing sound supplied by Eddie aka DorYuk of 24 Herbs.

shots from the making of the film

on location during filming, this was before the fight scene with most of the extras being Six Keys skater crew.

the final room 7, a small dark room with a sword on a plinth.

that's it, the end of show and tell!

The show finished in July and caused a bit of controversy as in the film I cut a live pigs head off. I didn't ask Marvel for clearance for Galactus as the head was destroyed after the show finished.

I love the art man! I gotta head down to LV and see your stuff displayed there. Sorry I missed you in my blog this time but in the meantime I noticed that there's a pic of you in this week's Ming Pao Weekly magazine. Yeah baby!

I wish I could have seen this show. How refreshing to see an artist who is working on the whole environment, not just on producing objects d'art for sale to collectors. (I think you know what I'm talking about, the current commerce in art, especially painting.) I also like how collaborative you are--sharing inspiration, works and credit with a whole team of people. Someday I would love to have the full Simon Birch experience. Any US gallery or museum shows in the future?
