Why Are We Doing This? | 我們為甚麼要這麼做？？

I am sure there are some of you that are wondering why we are building an on-line artistic community? What’s the point? How will our community be different from any number of communities on the Internet that feature artists?

To me anyway, the alivenotdead community is first and foremost about friends. The alive project started out as 4 friends that got together to make a movie. In order for us to accomplish our goal we supported each other and helped each other overcome obstacles.

What I have realized is that there is something very good and special about this type of team work.

In the entertainment business it is very common to see a sort of “Me-First” attitude. I am not saying that this is wrong. In fact to survive in any business, you have to look out for yourself first before you can look out for others. But what I have learned from working on “The Heavenly Kings” is that in order to create something different, something artistic, something creative, it is much easier to do so in a supportive environment than to do it alone.

Then I started thinking about the past. Great literary movements like the Lost Generation, with Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Beat Generation, with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Movements in cinema, like the French New Wave in the 60’s, American independent cinema in the 70’s, and Hong Kong’s New Wave in the late 70’s and 80’s. In these movements, the artists all knew each other, hung out together, shared ideas, and inspired one another. I am not trying to say that we are going to start some great artistic movement. What I am saying is that artists need a community that supports them and inspires them to do their best work!

So my hope is that alivenotdead becomes a community that supports artists. As you all learn more about the featured artists on our site, communicate with them through the forums and guestbook. Ask them questions about their craft, give them your honest comments regarding their work. Share your own creations with the artists you admire.

YOU are the community that will support the artists on alivenotdead. The artists will develop and grow along with you. This is the start of a special journey, for all of us, together.

在娛樂事業這行，常會見到一些「我先」的人，我不是說他們錯，不管在那一行，你要生存，你都得先顧好你自己，再去顧別人。但是，我從拍「四大天王」中學到的，卻與過去的很不同。要創作一些另類的或藝術性的作品，跟一幫支持者一起做，比你一個人做要簡單很多。

我回想過去，像Lost Generation偉大的文學家如Gertrude Stein和F.Scott Fitzgerald，和Beat Generation中的Jack Kerouac和Allen Ginsberg，對文學的推動，和六十年代的法國新浪潮、七十年代的美國獨立製片和香港七八十年代的新浪潮對電影的推動，都有相似之處。在這些時期，藝人們大家都彼此認識、一起混、分享構思和靈感。我並非在說我們是在為藝人開始了了不起的甚麼行動，我只是說，藝人需要團結和支持力，讓他們能做得更好。

所以，我希望alivenotdead是一個支持藝術家發揮創意的團體，讓你們能從我們的網站中，真正認識到他們，也可以跟他們溝通、分享他們對創作的另類心思。更可以讓他們看到你自己的作品。

你們參與了alivenotdead，就等於是在支持這個藝術團體。藝人和你，就會這樣一起成長。這就是我們一起要走的特殊的道路。
