“Sirens and Muses” – My new art series

Today, I would like to introduce you to my “Sirens and Muses” series. I’m just so incredibly lucky to have been able to shoot this. They somewhat remind me of my childhood. No, not because of the (hopefully tasteful) nudity, but because of the fact that they are reminiscent of mermaids. We’ve all watched Disney’s “Little Mermaid”, yes? Well, back in Germany, my mother introduced me to a live action version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “Die kleine Meerjungfrau”. Basically the same story, but instead of upbeat, adventurous and fun, it’s pure tragedy.

Lovely, isn’t it? It’s a Czech film, completely mystical, magical, the perfect fairy tale … I would watch this film almost every day, especially during Christmas time, when it would get cold. I’d snuggle into a big blanket, and make myself comfortable on the living room floor. This film made me really dreamy. To me, it was a precursor to all the Never Ending Stories and Lord of the Rings… A world, far and different from mine. Can you tell I’m a person who fantasizes a lot? Probably why I had to go into filmmaking at some point. Inevitable. In fact, my imagination scares me sometimes. My nighttime dreams are very very vivid these days…and slightly violent. Go figure. In any case, back to the mermaids. So this film reminds me of the photographs that I’m about to show you, simply because they’re creatures in water, who are graceful and intimate, and who do not have any fins!
