Movie Review: The Fortune Buddies/勁抽福祿壽

Ooooh, a leftover New Year film from TVB! With TVB actors!

I knew this film would suck.

How did I know?

It’s TVB.

It has Wong Cho Lam, the world’s most infuriating ...Read more

Movie Review: Wuxia/武俠

I saw  Wuxia/武俠 in theatres back in early August (late July?).

It’s a cross between a martial arts film and CSI.

No, I am not joking.

Donnie Yen plays a man who may not be who he says he is.

Takeshi K...Read more

Movie Review Preview

I have been grossly out of touch of late. It’s a combination of schedule and personality. Add to that the inevitable accumulation of past obligations (i.e. sh*t piling up), and avoidance has become the better part of valor.

But I find myself wanting, for some odd reason/delusion, to share a few things with you that are germane.

Lately, I have been asking myself why I write reviews. I think at least in part that’s also because I have been asking myself why I watch movies.<...Read more

Movie Review: Love Is the Only Answer/人約離婚後

Okay, this is shameful. This review was saved as a draft on July 17. But I’ve been incredibly busy since I saw this film, so at least I have a good reason for the late review. And as you may have guessed, this film is not a must-see-in-cinema experience. It’s not even a must see.<...Read more

“What’s Rock and Roll?”

I’ve been too busy lately, and I need to get back to posting stuff. Which, if I ever have time, I will do. So until then, I offer you some proof of where my seemingly intransigent (!) critique of local live music comes from. I worked for this band, albeit later on in their career. When this is your litmus test for live music, you end up being pretty snobbish.

Hamburg, Germany, May 1984. Jason and the Scorchers blowing up Rockpalast.

They went at it this hard an...Read more

Movie Review: Beach Spike/熱浪球愛戰

Beach Spike/熱浪球愛戰 was laugh out loud funny. I roared with glee for the full 90 minutes.

Because it is such a monstrous train wreck that you cannot believe it ever saw the light of day. To delineate the flaws, gross ineptitude...Read more

Movie Review: Treasure Inn/財神客棧

Near where I live is a McDonalds and a KFC.

I don’t eat McDonalds, for a lot of reasons. There’s something gnawingly un-food-like about a lot of the things they serve, such that I always imagine some Men-In-Black deleted scene of Jabba ...Read more

Interesting...

If I go to www.alive.tom.com/seantierney (Alive Not Dead's China portal) without logging in, my review of  isn't there. When I log in, it appears. I think I've been harmonized!!!What's funny is that my review of , which takes just as many swipes at the CCP, is intact. No accounting for taste, I guess.

Movie Review: Beginning of the Great Revival/建黨偉業

Communism WOW!

Beginning of the Great Revival/建黨偉業, formerly known as Founding of a Party(as part of China’s Founding franchise that began with Founding of a Republic) is a big, fat “Happy Birthday to Us!” f...Read more

Movie Review: Love for Life/最愛

****

Aaron Kwok looking like a Chinese Forrest Gump.

Sometimes my role (its not a job) as critic is more thankless than usual. Sometimes you are faced with a no-win situation.

To be honest, I actually think its that way...Read more
