Ignorance is Bliss, Vol. 2

As someone living in a place where the predominant language is not English, I have found myself becoming more and more interested in the ways language functions physically as well as intellectually. I enjoy listening to people speak English as a second language because it allows me to become conscious of my mother tongue in ways that I wouldn't if I lived in an Anglophone setting.

For instance, have you ever tried to figure out how to make the V sound? I mean break down what your mouth, tongue and teeth actually do?Read more

Movie Review: Storm Warriors/風雲II

Last Thursday I found myself once again at Elements, home of the tush-tickling Grand Cinema, to watch Storm Warriors/風雲IIwith the Movie Night Clique (電影夜集團). We wanted the benefits of Shaw Sound, the system that vibrates your seat when loud things happen. That's not a euphemism.

Let me start this review by owning up to a simple yet pertinent fact: I don't like movies made from comic books. There are several reasons.

For me, the 'alternate universe' concept is just a huge adolescent cop-out. ...Read more

Movie Review: Mulan/花木蘭

The advance buzz on this film was the main reason that the Movie Night crew (i.e. Kozoand his minions) saw this at the Dynasty instead of a more upscale theater. From what we had heard, it wasn't worth the trip to Elements.

Or even Olympian City.Frankly, I'd have gone upscale simply because it was a big sword-and-soldier...Read more

AnD Been Very Very Good to Me

As Etchyand Jun Kunghave pointed out, the MOOV/Converse We Love Live!show was this past weekend, and much ass was kicked, figuratively speaking.

I helped Jun with tech stuff, specifically guitars and general stage management. The show was a lot of fun, because I got to see Dear Jane and Qiu Ho...Read more

Movie Review: To Live and Die in Mongkok/ /旺角監獄

I missed this as a Movie Night viewing since I had a speaking engagement on the film's opening night. But I got to hang out with Yu Yung Yung, so it was very worth it.I was on my own for the viewing, which took place last week at the fabled Dynasty Theater in Mongkok. I normally don't like to go to...Read more

How to Tell If You're a Degenerate Dope Fiend

I have asthma in Hong Kong.

Not because I'm asthmatic.

Because I don't have it in America, or Japan, or Singapore, or Korea.

Hong Kong's pollution is so bad that my body responds asthmatically. This week has been pretty rough. The winter in general can be trying, simply because we get cold air from the north, i.e. China.

Is that the economy I smell cookin'?

In fairness, I can't really blame China for not buying into the whole environmental thing. ...Read more

He's Not Acting

I interviewed Eric Kot Man Fai for an hour.

He acts a certain way in a lot of his movies. It's not acting.

He's exactlythat way in real life. We discussed mahjong movies and art films. I promised him I'd try to get a grant to make a mahj...Read more
